Oar Making.
Six mature students under the supervision of Mike Broome, tutor for the Boat Building Academy, set about making a set of Gig Oars over
a period of 10 weeks.
Starting literally with blocks of wood made of pine and sapele mahogany in leys (for strength) the task looked daunting,
but with patient cutting, planing, and sanding down to a smooth finish, the exact measurements were achieved for a rowing-racing oar.
The final work was to oil the wood to preserve the oars and show the lovely wood grain, and then stitch on the leather sleeves which
stop chaffing in the rowlocks.
The newly named gig 'Rebel' now has a set of 6 oars (and one spare!) for the Lyme Regis Gig Club launch on the 28th of June 2008.
